One of Many

10 March 2010 | Paul Rea

Taking the blood from my heart
The air from my lungs
Every last ounce of strength from my sinew

The gears turn in perfect harmony
Symmetry
Balance

The miles roll
As the wheels turn
The hours fade
In fleeting glimpses
When I dare to raise my eyes from the road ahead

The pain endures
Suffering
But I feeling nothing
I am neither here nor there
My mind in another moment
From another frame

My body
A part of something greater than I
One of many
Together we exceed the sum of our parts
Cutting the wind

As the road turns upward
Towards the sky
The freedom of flight
My feet spinning in perpetual infinity
While anchored securely to the ground

Weighing almost nothing
These chains feel heavy
But they liberate
Not enslave

And when my journey finally ends
And my body throbs
My heart soars and my soul sings
So much taken
Yet even more given back

My biggest vice
For so simple a device
And I’d not have it any other way
