You Can’t Take From Me

15 March 2010 | Paul Rea

You cannot take
What I don’t own

You cannot take the autumn breeze
Nor the colours that adorn
The autumn trees

You cannot take the sun that shines
The warmth it brings
Nor the truth it finds

You cannot take the winter chill
The bitter cold
The frost that kills

You cannot take the stars that shine
That light the way
From an ancient time

You cannot take the birds that sing
The rich green grass
The signs of spring

You cannot take
The cliffs that soar
The tide that breaks
The waves that roar

You cannot take the dawn’s early rise
The sunset red
The twilight skies

You may just take this heart that beats
These hands that feel
The veins that bleed

You may just take this life of mine
My riches, my possessions
All at one time

But you cannot take
What I don’t own

For I am one with the light
That you cannot dim
You cannot break me
Because I refuse
To let the darkness win
